SCHOOL COOK WINS NATIONAL SAUSAGE COMPETITION

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Vicky Pring, a cook at Bishopsteignton Primary School, Teignmouth has won first prize in a national competition that celebrated British Sausage Week 2008 (3-9 November).

Vicky triumphed in the popular competition, which set out to find the best and most nutritious sausage-based school meal, with her appealing ‘Sizzling Sausage Bake’.

The entry was one of more than 60 from school cooks nationwide and was judged on its nutritional content and appeal to children. Following a round of paper judging the top ten entries were then prepared by a home economist and served up for the judges to taste.

The ‘Sizzling Sausage Bake’ really hit the spot! The judges thought it tasty and warming, with excellent appeal to young children. The dish uses low fat cheese, contains no additional salt and incorporates plenty of additional vegetables – making it perfect for school meals. And the children at Bishopsteignton agree, with many wanting to eat it more often.

Vicky was presented with a £100 shopping voucher of choice, a framed certificate and a microscope for the school, as well as a £100 cheque to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust – the lead charity for British Sausage Week. What’s more the winning dish was cooked and served up for lunch to all 160 pupils and staff and will appear in the next BPEX school recipe booklet ‘Great It’s Lunchtime.’

Tony Goodger, BPEX foodservice trade manager said: “The schools cooks’ competition is always very popular but this year was a great success – our congratulations go to Vicky for her superb dish. British Sausage Week celebrates the fact that sausages can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet – in and out of school – and this competition demonstrates that they really are much loved by the nation’s youngsters.”

Vicky said: “I’m absolutely delighted! The ‘Sizzling Sausage Bake’ is an ideal meal for school children of all ages; it fits within nutritional guidelines while keeping children full and satisfied.”

Audrey Williams from The Cystic Fibrosis Trust was pleased to accept the £100 donation which will support their vital work to help youngsters with this life threatening disease, about 80 of whom are in Devon.
